Job Description

The Cook 2 is a skilled cook position responsible for producing recipes, following accepted culinary practices and reports to the sous chef, supporting the mission and goals of a “Best in Class” dining program. As a culinary production member of a dynamic dining hall operation, the Cook 2 will support the daily operations of the dining hall. He/she will complete general assignments related to the assembly, pre-preparation and preparation or cooking of specific items through standards of service and hospitality, insuring the Notre Dame Community and guests with the very best in food and service. This culinary position is critical to insuring all diners experience excellent food production and service and being responsive to the changing needs and desires of customers. The Cook 2 produces food and is responsible for following recipes and accepted culinary practices; participates in general assignments, such as, preparation of food; supports special or catered events within the dining hall or elsewhere on campus; and is responsible for performing tasks related to the appearance, safety and sanitation of food production and service.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or GED and 1 to 2 years experience required.
Must be able to demonstrate basic kitchen skills using Notre Dame Campus Dining written and practical assessments and safety training/requirements. Must have fundamental working knowledge of the following basic cooking techniques: sautéing, braising, grilling, broiling, poaching, roasting, baking, and basic sauce production. ServSafe, Aller-Train and National Restaurant Association Sanitation certification required. Must work in a professional, hospitable and empathetic manner to bring the best to the surface of all operations. Be welcoming, sincere and provide a great hospitality experience for all university students, faculty/staff, guests and visitors. Maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance to professional standards. This position carries many different duties and depending on the assigned area, the percentage of work for the duties and responsibility change. Ability to communicate well with fellow employees and management orally and in writing. Ability to comprehend and perform both routine jobs and special needs with basic instruction. Ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree in Culinary Arts or equivalent is preferred.
