Job Title Optical Engineer
Job Description

The Optical Engineer will work in the newly established Engineering and Design Core Facility (EDCF). As an optical engineer, the employee will work on projects being pursued by Notre Dame researchers under the supervision of the core facility lead engineer and EDCF faculty director.
Responsibilities include optical ray-tracing design (e.g. Zemax, Code V), numerical simulations, diffraction analysis, tolerancing, optimization, prototyping, lab experiments, risk assessment, group meeting attendance and presentations, collaboration with other EDCF engineers, some aspects of proposal development, consultation, working with vendors, and with technology transfer.
The optical engineer will work closely with EDCF engineers and report to the EDCF lead engineer who in turn will report to the faculty director of the EDCF. The optical engineer will work closely with the mechanical engineer on CAD drawings.
Working with the lead engineer (manager), the optical engineer will develop a portfolio of projects with various researchers across the campus.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in field relevant to needs of the Facility is required.
Significant background (7+ years of experience) required.
Specific experience in optical engineering is required.
Applicant must be capable of communicating well with faculty, students, other staff, etc. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
Attention to detail is a required attribute of the successful candidate.
Candidates must have Zemax optical design and/or Code V optical design or related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in relevant field preferred.
Preference will be given to engineers that have cross-discipline expertise.
